(Page 124, summarizing characteristics of avoidance).<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Although they may seem cold and detached, avoidant individuals are not as indifferent as they appear on the surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their tendency to withdraw and display emotional coldness is actually a coping mechanism developed to avoid feeling hurt or distressed again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Children with avoidant attachment often grow up in environments where their emotions were not adequately soothed by caregivers or were met with rigid, authoritarian parenting. This led to increased stress and anxiety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response, these children learn to excessively regulate their emotions, almost as if they are turning off a switch entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To protect themselves from distress, they escape from painful environments and suppress their feelings. They deny the importance of emotions and relationships as a defense mechanism to avoid getting hurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"002\"><strong>How Does Avoidant Attachment Develop?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;An avoidant pattern is thought to emerge from interactions with caregivers who consistently rebuff the infant&#8217;s bids for comfort and closeness, or who are overly intrusive and controlling, thereby disrupting the child&#8217;s autonomous exploration. Being Ignored Over a Long Period<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When a child\u2019s emotions and thoughts are consistently overlooked, they may start avoiding relationships or situations that could trigger emotional responses, as a defense mechanism against the pain of neglect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neglect can manifest in various ways, such as parents who rarely interact with their children, dislike physical touch, or avoid hugging them. Being Overly Controlled<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When parents exert excessive control over their child\u2019s life, depriving them of the opportunity to express their own emotions, they are, in essence, ignoring the child\u2019s feelings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These children grow up believing that their emotions and preferences are unimportant\u2014only their parents\u2019 rules and standards matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Such parents often believe they \u201cknow what\u2019s best\u201d for their child or even assume they \u201cknow exactly\u201d what their child wants, making decisions on their behalf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, the child\u2019s true thoughts are never acknowledged, leading to immense emotional pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of feeling loved, they experience relationships as an imposition\u2014like being forced to accept gifts they do not want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When a child is repeatedly ignored or misunderstood regarding their genuine preferences, they lose the ability to clearly express themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even as adults, they may seek close relationships but struggle to trust others because their early experiences were filled with neglect and coercion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. People with these characteristics appear highly self-sufficient, seemingly needing no one and trusting no one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;To manage potential distress related to attachment, avoidant individuals employ &#8216;deactivating strategies.&#8217; These include suppressing thoughts and memories that elicit distress, maintaining emotional distance, focusing attention away from attachment threats, insisting on self-reliance, and downplaying the importance of relationships. This can manifest as compulsive self-sufficiency or pseudo-independence.&#8221;<\/p>\n<cite>Mikulincer, M., Shaver, P. R., &amp; Pereg, D. (2003). Attachment&nbsp;theory and affect regulation: The dynamics, development, and cognitive consequences of attachment-related strategies.&nbsp;<em>Motivation and Emotion, 27<\/em>(2), 77\u2013102.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>They rarely express their emotional needs and avoid relying on others or seeking help. When interacting with them, they may seem disinterested in others, often giving off an impression of coldness or self-centeredness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If asked why they behave this way, they might respond with something like, \u201cEmotions are unnecessary; don\u2019t expect help from others.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, beneath this independent exterior lies a softer, more vulnerable side.
